What recruiters should know
Perl is a legacy scripting language in clear structural decline. It is rarely chosen for new projects in 2026; Python, Go, and Bash have replaced it for virtually all its traditional use cases (text processing, automation, web scripting). Remaining demand is almost entirely legacy system maintenance — government and enterprise environments running 15-25 year old Perl codebases. No meaningful new green-field Perl development is occurring. Career risk: specialising in Perl restricts job mobility significantly.
